Cliniko alternatives for Australian clinics that also sell things

Cliniko is beloved in Australian allied health, and for good reason. But it was built for practitioners billing appointments — not for clinics that also retail skincare, sell packages, and market like a business. Here's when to look elsewhere.

Ask an Australian physio or podiatrist what software they use and there's a good chance the answer is Cliniko. It's stable, the notes are solid, per-practitioner pricing is fair, and the company has real goodwill in allied health.

So this isn't a takedown. It's a boundary line. Cliniko is practice management — appointments, notes, letters, invoicing for consults. The moment your clinic behaves like a retail business as well, you start bolting on systems: a POS for the skincare shelf, a Shopify for online orders, a Mailchimp for campaigns, a spreadsheet for stock. Wemu's pitch is simple: that's all one system.

Where Cliniko stops and duct tape begins

  • No retail POS — selling product at reception means a separate till or tapping it through as an 'appointment'.
  • No inventory — stock on the shelf isn't tracked, reordered, or costed anywhere.
  • No online shop — clients can book online but can't buy the aftercare kit you recommended.
  • Marketing is minimal — recalls exist, but campaigns, promos, and win-back flows need another tool.
  • Packages and serial treatments (6-session plans, credit packs) take workarounds.

What Wemu does differently

Clinical records that hold up

Treatment notes in Wemu are built like a record, not a memo: structured templates (SOAP, screening, your own), body charts you can annotate — including your clinic's own diagrams — signatures that lock the note, and amendments that append rather than overwrite. Every note carries a who-did-what trail: created, edited, signed, amended, each with the person and time. Clinical content is restricted to staff you've granted clinical access; reception sees that a note exists, never what's in it.

The retail half is native

Switching in practice

  1. 1Export clients and appointment history from Cliniko.
  2. 2Import into a Wemu trial; recreate your note templates in the form builder (or send us yours and we'll build them during the trial).
  3. 3Add your retail products with cost prices and stock counts.
  4. 4Go live on bookings first, retail second — most clinics run the POS from day one and move online bookings across a week later.

Your records stay yours

Clinical notes exported from Cliniko can be attached to the matching Wemu client record, so history stays reachable during the transition.

Frequently asked questions

Are Wemu's clinical notes compliant for Australian allied health?+
Notes are structured, sign-locked, amendment-only after signing, and carry a full audit trail — the record-keeping properties practitioner registries expect. Access is restricted to staff granted clinical access. As with any system, confirm your association's specific requirements.
Does Wemu handle Medicare or private health fund claiming?+
Not yet. If claiming is part of your billing, run a claiming tool alongside Wemu for that portion — everything else (bookings, notes, retail, marketing) runs in Wemu.
Can reception staff see clinical notes?+
Only if you grant them clinical access. Otherwise they see that a clinical note exists on the timeline — never its contents. Private intake forms can additionally be limited to specific staff.
What does Wemu cost for a clinic with 5 practitioners?+
The same as for 2 — plans are flat with unlimited team members, which is usually the biggest line-item difference versus per-practitioner pricing. See the pricing page for current numbers.
