Marketing consent, unsubscribes and quiet hours

Who can get marketing emails and texts, how customers opt out, and what's never affected

The rule in one line

Marketing texts need the customer's recorded agreement. Marketing emails can go to your customers with an unsubscribe link, unless they've said no.

Recording permission

Navigate to: Customers โ†’ open a customer โ†’ Edit details โ†’ Marketing permission

For Emails and Texts, choose Agreed, Not asked or Said no. Then pick how they told you: in person, over the phone, in writing, on an online form, from an imported list, or another way. Wemu records who made the change and when, and adds it to the customer's Activity.

You can also record that someone agreed to texts while setting up a reminder for them.

What needs consent

  • Campaign texts and marketing reminders by text only go to customers marked Agreed for texts. Anyone else is skipped, and if Wemu can't check a customer's consent, the text isn't sent.
  • Marketing emails go to everyone except customers marked Said no or who unsubscribed. Every one carries an unsubscribe link.

How customers opt out

  • Email: the unsubscribe link in every marketing email, or the one-click unsubscribe button in mail apps that offer it
  • Text: every marketing text ends with how to opt out. That's Reply STOP when it comes from your own number, or an Opt out link when it comes from Wemu's shared sender name, which can't receive replies (usually the case in Australia and the Philippines). A STOP reply (or UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, QUIT, END, STOPALL or OPTOUT) stops every text from your business, booking texts included. Replying START lifts that; marketing texts only resume if they'd agreed to them before.

Opt-outs stick

When a customer opts out themselves, staff can't quietly undo it by switching them back to Not asked. Only mark Agreed again if they asked you to start again, in person or in writing; Wemu asks you to confirm first.

Opt-outs are also kept on a separate list, so they survive the customer being deleted, their number or email being changed, or a new record being created by an online booking.

Quiet hours for reminders

Customer reminders only go out between 9am and 8pm in your business's time zone. Anything due outside those hours waits until 9am.

Not affected

Booking confirmations, receipts and other messages about something the customer asked for aren't marketing, so they're sent whatever the customer's marketing permission says. The one exception is a STOP reply: it stops every text from your business, booking texts included, until they reply START.
